Goa CET

Engineering, Medicine, Architecture, Dentistry and Pharmacy based exam, applicable to colleges and institutions within Goa, primarily for students who belong to Goa.

Goa CET (Common Entrance Test) is a State level entrance examination conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education, Govt. of Goa for all students who are Indian citizens and have resided in Goa for a minimum period of 10 years (5 years for those whose either of the parent/ grandparent is born in Goa) and who want to get into courses related to Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy offered by the Government, Government-aided and un-aided colleges and institutions situated in Goa.

Students aspiring to get into Architecture are admitted on the basis of their score in NATA.

It is one of the most important State Level examinations in Goa. Most colleges in Goa admit students on the basis of their Goa CET marks.

Even though students who do not belong to Goa can apply for the exam and seek admission in the various courses, the number of seats available for them is very, very limited.

What are the eligibility criteria?

You must be a citizen of India to be able to give the GCET exam.

You must have lived in Goa for a continuous period of at least 10 years (5 years for those whose either of the parent/ grandparent is born in Goa) or be a child of an employee of the Govt. of Goa who is posted outside Goa.

Students who do not belong to Goa can apply, but will only be given admission if seats are vacant after all rounds of admission (last priority).

To be eligible for the Goa GCET, you need to have passed your 12th standard exams/HSSC (Std. 12th Science) or equivalent examinations from schools and colleges within Goa. Candidates who are going to appear for their 12th standard or equivalent examinations in the same year as the Goa GCET are also eligible to appear for the entrance examination.

There is no upper or lower age limit for Engineering, Pharmacy and Architecture courses. For courses related to Medicine, Dentistry and Homeopathy, you must not be less than 17 years of age on the 31st of December of the year of admission.

You have to appear for the Goa GCET if you want to get into the Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Homeopathy and Pharmacy courses. Students aspiring to get into architecture must have appeared and obtained a valid score in the NATA examination conducted by the Council of Architecture.

For MBBS, BDS and BHMS courses, you must have secured a minimum percentage of 50% in aggregate of subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology in your Class 12th or equivalent examinations. Also, you must have English as a compulsory subject in your 12th standard or equivalents. For SC/ST/OBC candidates, the minimum required percentage is 40%. For applicants belonging to PH category for MBBS and BDS Course, the minimum required percentage is 45%.

Additionally, candidates who wish to pursue Medicine or Dentistry are required to have scored not less than 50% in the GCET examination (45% for PH candidates). There is no minimum marks requirement for candidates who wish to pursue Homeopathy.

For students who want to get into engineering, the aggregate percentage in their 12th standard or equivalent examinations in Physics, Math and either of the following subjects: Chemistry/Bio-Technology/Computer Science/Biology should not be less than 45%. For SC/ST/OBC candidates, this requirement is 40%. Also, English should be a compulsory subject in their 12th standard or equivalent examinations (For both general and reserved candidates).

For the B.Pharm. course, you should have passed your 12th standard examination or its equivalents with Physics, Chemistry and either of the following subjects: Mathematics/Biotechnology/Computer Science /Biology with a minimum aggregate percentage 45%. For SC/ST/OBC candidates, this requirement is 40%. Also, English should be a compulsory subject in their 12th standard or equivalent examinations (For both general and reserved candidates).

Students who aspire to get in to courses related to Architecture should have passed their 12th standard examinations or its equivalents or their 10+3 Diploma (any stream) recognized by Central/State Governments with Math as one of their subjects and should have an aggregate percentage of not less than 50%. For SC/ST/OBC candidates, this requirement is 45%. Candidates who have completed their International Baccalaureate Diploma, after 10 years of schooling, with not less than 50% marks in aggregate and with Mathematics as compulsory subject of examination are also eligible for this course. The minimum score in the NATA examination you require to get into this course is 80/200.

How to apply?

The prospectus and the application forms are available at the various notified places in Goa.

You can also obtain the application form if you live outside Goa by sending a request to the Director, Directorate of Technical Education, Alto- Porvorim, Goa, 403521 along with a DD of Rs.900/-payable in favor of “Director of Technical Education” at Panaji.

Once you procure and fill the application form, You will have to submit it in person at the notified Application Reception Centre as per centre opted, along with a DD of Rs. 700/- payable in favor of “Director of Technical Education” at Panaji, and three identical photographs as indicated, and obtain the Photo-Admit Card, from the Admission Committee, on the same day.

You will have to submit this form in person at notified Application Reception Centre as per centre opted, along with a DD of Rs. 900/- (towards the prospectus fee) and the test fee of Rs.700/- by demand draft payable in favor of “Director of Technical Education” at Panaji – Goa..

Admit cards for the GCET will only be issued to candidates in person.

The prospectus will contain two application forms (A&B). You will have to submit the Application form (B) also as per the specified date after the publication of result of the GCET.

In the Application Form - B, you will have to specify the amount of categories of subjects or courses you want to apply for. Only one Application Form (B) needs to be submitted even if you intend to apply in more than one category.

Once you submit the application form (completed with necessary certificates), you will receive an acknowledgement card with a registration number as proof of submitting the application form.

What is the pattern of the examination?

The exam will be based on objective type questions in the multiple choice format.

Each question will have four options with only one correct answer.

The exam will be based on the syllabus prescribed by the Goa Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education, Porvorim, for Standard 12th(Science) examination for the current year in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.

GCET will consist of 4 papers, namely – Physics, Math, Biology and Chemistry.

Each paper will consist of 75 questions of one mark each.

The duration of each paper will be two hours.

Attempt as many questions as possible as there will be no negative marking.

Students who want to study Engineering have to only appear for Physics and Math. Students aspiring to get into Pharmacy related courses have to appear for Chemistry and Physics. Students aspiring to get into Medicine have to appear for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

The merit list (ranking) will be prepared for candidates (Engineering) based on their GCET scores in Physics and Math.. For Medicine, Homeopathy and Dentistry, the ranks will be based on the candidate’s GCET scores in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.. For Pharmacy, the merit list will be prepared for candidates based on their GCET scores in Physics and Chemistry.

For Architecture, the ranks will based on the NATA scores as well as scores in the qualifying examination (12thclass etc.) with equal weightage given to both.

What do you do after you get your results?

The counseling will be conducted for 85% ‘State Quota’ seats in Government and Government Aided Medical and Dental Colleges in Goa. These seats are reserved only for Goa Domiciles.

Admissions into the remaining 15% seats in Government Medical and Dental colleges in Goa are conducted by the DGHS under the ‘All India Quota’ on the basis of AIPMT results through the following website: http://www.mcc.nic.in/mccres/HomePage.aspx#.

The engineering counseling is conducted for all the State Quota seats (100%) in Government and Government Aided Engineering Colleges in Goa and 75% State Quota seats in Private Engineering Colleges in Goa. All these seats are reserved for Goa State Domiciles.

Admissions into the remaining 25% seats are not conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education, Goa. Contact the college directly for admissions under this category.

Your goal is to get admission in a suitable course at a suitable college. The test result along with the college/course specific eligibility criteria become the basis for the admission.

Once the results are announced, you will participate in an offline counseling procedure which is conducted by the ‘Directorate of Technical Education, Govt. of Goa’.

You will not be eligible for admission into a college if you do not report for the counseling personally.

Before you report for the counseling, make sure you research in detail about the courses and colleges you can join through this counseling procedure. You should be clear about at least your top 5 choices/preference before you step in the hall for counseling.

The counseling will be conducted at the Admission Centre at Directorate of Technical Education, Porvorim , Goa on the specified date.

You will need to reach the above mentioned venue on the day of counseling. Reach the venue in time along with all your important documents for verification.

Once you reach the venue and the counseling begins, you will need to select the course and college you wish to join out of the ones that are available for you at that point of time. You will only need to make one choice, therefore it is important to think carefully before you select a particular course.

The admission will only be considered as final once you have deposited your documents and paid the admission fees.You will have to reach the college/institute in which you’ve been granted admission within 3 days of the allotment so as to confirm your seat and obtain acknowledgement thereof.

What are the prospects?

GCET (Goa Common Entrance Test) is a very important examination for students who belong to Goa and want to get into courses related to Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy. For students who want to get into Architecture, the GCET acts as an admission committee and compiles a ranking list based on their NATA scores.
