George Mitra, Executive Director, Avendus Capital, works in the financial services business of this investment bank. More specifically, he sells financial services. He likes to deal with people and his job allows him to meet interesting and very successful people. He also enjoys enhancing his knowledge, which helps because it lets him stay aware of the various financial products in the market and even devise new products and options for his customers.
As per him, people perceive a job in the banking and financial services industry as high paying and demanding in terms of hours spent at work. While some of this may be true, the reality is that a sales/relationship building role is extremely demanding. They face rejections a lot, despite which they have to stay enthusiastic and fresh in each meeting, however tired. Travel takes away family time. Even when he's not traveling, there are no set hours to his job. It is in reality a 24 / 7 job.
George studied Science in class 11 and 12 and engineering in Instrumentation and Electronics at Jadavpur University. He worked as design engineer at Engineers India Limited for two years before going on to do his MBA in Marketing at Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi. He joined Deutsche Bank AG. as a Management Trainee, immediately after the MBA and left 13 years later as Director and North Head, in the Bank's Private Wealth Management Division. For the last two years he's been with Avendus Caputal.
Reflecting back on his career, George recalls that in high School, the only choice available was Engineering or Medicine. He was more interested in Engineering, so he took up that stream. He really liked electronics, hence was able to do well in his studies. Post Engineering, he first wanted to do a post graduation in Engineering, so he took up a job. His work experiences made him realise that he would like to go into "Management" so he did his MBA. He interned in a marketing company, SmithKline Beecham, and took up a job with Deutsche Bank from his college campus.
George advises high school and senior school students to stick to what they are passionate about, and seek to do the best they can in the stream of their choice till their Bachelors degree. If the results in their Bachelor's degree are good, they will have the choice to pursue an MBA. Their stream in graduation does not matter. What matters is to be the best that they can be in whatever they choose to study.
