Hotel Management - Studying Abroad

Hotel Management is a popular course for students who wish to join the Hospitality Industry. A large number of Indian student who wish to pursue a career in Hotel Management choose to study abroad so as to gain international knowledge and exposure, as well as receive a very high standard of education.

Some universities also offer a B.A (Bachelor of Arts) in this field. The typical duration of all undergraduate courses is 4 years.

At the postgraduate level, you will generally receive an M.S (Master of Science) in Hotel/Hospitality Administration. However, some universities award an M.A (Master of Arts) or an M.L.A (Master of Liberal Arts) degree in related fields such as Gastronomy, rather than a M.S in Hospitality Administration. You will also come across universities that award MBAs or other degrees in this field. The typical duration of all postgraduate courses in the U.S is 1 – 2 years.

Hotel/Hospitality Management is offered as an undergraduate as well as a postgraduate course in the U.K. It is important to note that many universities in the U.K do not offer specific courses in this field, including the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.

At the undergraduate level, you will generally receive a B.Sc. (Bachelor of Science) in Hospitality Management. However, some universities like the University of West London offer a B.A (Bachelor of Arts) degree instead of a B.Sc. in the same field.

Courses in this field are often offered in combination with related subjects, such as a B.A in Event Management and Hospitality, or a B.Sc. in International Tourism and Hospitality Management etc.

The typical duration of undergraduate degrees in the U.K is 3 years, although many universities offer 4 year courses in this field that include a year of practical learning (industry placement).

However, it is not rare for universities to offer this course as a B.A (Bachelor of Arts) or even a B.Com. Canada

Hotel/Hospitality Management courses are primarily offered at the undergraduate level in Canada. However, it is important to understand that only a handful of universities offer this course, even at the undergraduate level.

At the undergraduate level, you will typically receive a Bachelor of Hospitality Management (BHM) degree. The duration of most of these degrees is 4 years. Some universities also offer B.A (Bachelor of Arts) degrees in this field.

It is important to note that at most universities, the degree program is offered for last 2 years, i.e the third and the fourth year, whereas the first 2 years are completed as a Diploma from the same or a different institution. Courses in this field are often offered in combination with related subjects such as International Tourism, Culinary Arts etc.

At the postgraduate level, you might receive an M.A in this or a related field such as Recreation Management. The duration of most of these programs is 2 years, although accelerated programs are available.

Switzerland

Switzerland is one of the most popular study destinations for Hotel and Hospitality Management. Courses in this field are generally offered both at the undergraduate and at the postgraduate level in Switzerland.

Even though most institutions that offer courses in this field are institutes or Hotel Management Schools and not universities, they offer Bachelor and Masters Degrees apart from a number of undergraduate and postgraduate Diplomas. Internships and practical learning are a very important part of all courses in this field in Switzerland.
