What is the pattern of the examination?

The NIFT entrance exam for Bachelor in Design courses comprises three stages: a General Ability Test (GAT), a Creative Ability Test (CAT) and a Situation Test.

The General Ability Test (GAT) includes questions on various topics to evaluate your Quantitative Ability, Communication Ability, English Comprehension, Analytical Ability, General Knowledge and Current Affairs. In this test, you will face questions related to basic mathematics (fractions, percentage etc.), logical reasoning, English writing skills, your ability to communicate and express yourself as well as general knowledge and current affairs related questions.

The Creative Ability Test (CAT) includes questions that evaluate your intuition skill, observation skills, innovation and creativity. The test focuses on your creative and innovative medium, use of color and illustration skills.

Shortlisted candidates from the written examination (CAT and GAT) will appear for a ‘Situation Test’. The situation test is a hands – on test that aims to judge the candidate on his ability and skills regarding how well can he/she handle the material and how well can he/she use creativity to come up with an effective design solution with limited resources. 30% of the weightage of the Situation Test will be given to a ‘write up’ that explains your concept and model.

The weightage for Bachelor programs (except B.FTech) is as follows:
GAT – 30%, CAT – 50% and Situation Test – 20%.
Please note that you will first have to secure the minimum marks required in the GAT and CAT to be eligible for the Situation Test.

Students who are applying for the B.FTech course will only have to appear for the General Ability Test (GAT). Their admission is only based on this test.

All written papers consist of objective type questions in the multiple choice format. Each question has four options with only one correct answer.

The duration of the GAT exam for all Bachelor courses (except B.FTech) is 2 hours. The duration of the CAT exam is 3 hours.

The duration of the GAT exam for B.FTech students is 3 hours.

It should be kept in mind that merely qualifying the entrance examination does not guarantee admission.

The admission process will be based on a counseling process for which all notified candidates will have to appear with necessary documents.
