Pilot Training based national level entrance exam, applicable to the IGRUA – CPL course, for students who want to join the course and obtain licenses and become commercial pilots.

IGRUA (Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi) is one of the best flying training institutions in India. It provides aspiring Pilots with an environment that consists of state of the art training facilities. IGURA is an autonomous body under the control of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. It offers a CPL Course (Commercial Pilot Licensing Course) for issue of a Commercial Pilot License along with Multi – Engine endorsement and Instrument Rating (IR) on Multi – Engine aircraft.
Candidates are admitted to this course on the basis of the IGRUA – CPL entrance exam. It is a national level entrance exam for the CPL course and is attempted by thousands of students annually. The duration of the CPL course is 18 months (extendable). Through the IGRUA – CPL entrance exam, you can also opt for the B.Sc. (Aviation) Degree from Chatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University Kanpur, being conducted simultaneously with CPL Course. The duration of the B.Sc course will be 3 years.

Out of the total 75 seats in the IGRUA - CPL course, 11 are reserved for SC candidates and 6 are reserved for ST candidates. 21 seats are reserved for OBC (Non – creamy layer) candidates. Please note that the IGRUA admits around 100 candidates every year. They are inducted in a phased manner every third month. Candidates will be admitted on the basis of their performance in a 3 stage process. The 1st stage comprises of the IGRUA – CPL entrance exam. The examination is held in Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Raebareli. Candidates who qualify in the written exam will have to appear for an Interview/Viva. The next stage is a Pilot Aptitude/Psychometric Test. Only successful candidates in Pilot Aptitude / Psychometric Test shall qualify for final selection.

What are the eligibility criteria?

To be eligible for the IGRUA – CPL exam, you should have passed your Class 12th or equivalent exams from a recognized board of education.

You should have had Math and Physics as compulsory subjects in your Class 12th or equivalent exams. Also, you should have scored not less than 55% on an aggregate in Math and Physics in your Class 12th or equivalent examination. This requirement is decreased to 50% for SC/ST candidates.

You should have had English as a compulsory subject in your Class 12th or equivalent examinations and you should have passed it individually.

Candidates who are going to appear for their Class 12th or equivalent examinations in the same year as the IGRUA – CPL exam, will also be eligible provided that they can submit their final mark sheet at the time of their interview.

You should be not less than 17 years of age at the time of joining the course.

You will also have to submit a ‘Class – 1 medical certificate’ before joining the course to certify that you are in a position to start flying without further delay.

How to apply?

The application forms for the IGRUA  - CPL exam are available on the following website: http://www.igrua.gov.in

Please make sure that you submit the application in the prescribed format only.

Take a print out of the application form posted on the website as you will have to submit your application through post.

Fill in the form carefully. You will have to paste a recent photograph of yours (3cm x 4cm) in the designated area and sign your photograph and the form.

You will have to enclose a Demand Draft (non – refundable) of Rs. 6,000 in favor of ‘Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi’ drawn on any nationalized/ scheduled Bank and payable at Raebareli as Application fee.

Apart from the photograph you have posted, another copy of the same photograph will have to be sent along with the application form and the Demand Draft through registered/speed post at the following address:

The admit cards will be send directly to the candidates through DTDC Courier/ Speed Post. You can contact the IGRUA office on telephone if you do not receive the admit cards by the specified date. Your roll number and examination center will also be posted on the official website of IGRUA.

What is the pattern of the examination?

Candidates are selected on the basis of a 3 Stage selection procedure that includes a written test examination, a Viva/Interview and a Pilot Aptitude/Psychometric Test.

The first stage of the procedure is the written examination. It consists of Objective type questions in the multiple choice format. Each question will have four options with only one correct answer.

The written examination will look to test you on your knowledge in the following subjects: General English, Math, Physics, Reasoning and Current Affairs. Please keep in mind that the questions will be based on the 10+2 level.

The duration of the paper will be 2 hours.

Candidates who qualify in the written examination have to appear for a Viva/Interview. The Cut off marks are announced by the IGRUA after the written examination.

The cutoff marks for SC/ST/OBC candidates will be 5% less than the cut off marks secured by the last candidate in the General category.

In the Viva/Interview, you will have to submit all original documents of your qualifications including your birth certificate, caste certificate, 10th and 12th mark sheet etc.

The interview will consist of industry stalwarts like NACIL, DGCA, Psychologist and IGRUA examiners. It will aim to test you on your communication skills, personality and aptitude.

Candidates who pass in the interview will have to appear for a Pilot Aptitude/Psychometric Test. You can only be granted admission if you pass in the Pilot Aptitude/Psychometric Test.

The rank list/merit list will be created on the basis of your performance in all the three stages.

What are the prospects?

IGRUA – CPL is one of the most prestigious Pilot Training courses in the country. It is a reputed and well known institute. You will get jobs easily after this course compared to courses from other institutes. Please keep in mind that it is a very competitive examination. The total number of shortlisted candidates after the written examination is approximately three times the total number of seats available. That along with the excellent facilities has made IGRUA responsible for giving India many qualified and exceptional pilots over the years.
