COMED – K or KCET?

All students who do not belong to Karnataka and wish to join COMED – K member institutions will have to appear for the COMED – K exam. They cannot appear for the KCET and join Government or Government Aided colleges in Karnataka.

However, if you’re a student who belongs to Karnataka, then you can get into COMED – K institutions by appearing for the KCET or the COMED – K UGET. A certain portion of the total seats in COMED – K institutions are reserved for Karnataka domiciles who have appeared for the KCET.

Additionally, Karnataka domiciles can also get into Government and Government aided colleges in Karnataka, but only on the basis of their scores in the KCET.

It is important to keep in mind that students admitted through their COMED – K scores have to pay a much higher tuition fee every year than students who got admissions through KCET.

Students who do not belong to Karnataka do not have a choice with regards to this as they cannot appear for the KCET or apply to Government and Government Aided colleges. Their only option is to appear for the COMED – K and apply to its member institutions in Karnataka.

But for a Karnataka domicile (who can choose to appear for either of the tests), a seat allotted through the KCET will cost much less than a seat allotted through the COMED – K UGET.  Therefore, it is only ideal for Karnataka domiciles to appear for the COMED - K in case they wish to improve their chances of getting a seat by appearing for both the tests and if they do not mind paying the higher tuition fee amount for the same education (in case they’re allotted a seat through COMED – K).

Admissions into the remaining seats in Private Medical/Dental Colleges of Karnataka are conducted through the KCET exam.

Your goal is to get admission in a suitable course at a suitable college. The test result along with the college/course specific eligibility criteria become the basis for the admission.

Once the results are announced, you will participate in an offline counseling procedure which is conducted by the ‘Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka’ or COMED – K for MBBS, BDS, B.E and B.Arch courses.

You will not be eligible for admission into a college if you do not report for the counseling personally.

Before you report for the counseling, make sure you research in detail about the courses and colleges you can join through this counseling procedure. You should be clear about at least your top 5 choices/preference before you step in the hall for counseling.

Make your choices/preferences based on two main factors:

1. The colleges and courses you seek.

2. The colleges and courses that are likely to admit you based on your rank. Go through the ranks that were admitted by a particular college last year for your course. These ranks are generally available online.

The counseling will be conducted in 2 rounds .You will need to reach the specified venue on the day of counseling.

Reach the venue in time along with all your important documents for verification along with a Demand Draft equivalent to the amount of the annual tuition fee for your course (specified in the brochure).

Once you reach the venue, you will need to get your documents verified and get yourself registered for the counseling.

After the counseling begins, you will need to select the course and college you wish to join out of the ones that are available for you at that point of time.

The admission will only be considered as final once you have deposited your documents and paid the admission fees and received the allotment letter.

A second round of counseling will be conducted for seats that are left vacant after the end of the first round.

You will have to reach the college/institute in which you’ve been granted admission within the specified duration so as to confirm your seat.
