Following my interests, and the support of my family, I became the kind of doctor I wanted to be: a Dermatologist!
In my final years of schooling, I was torn between engineering and medicine. However, I leaned towards medicine. I prepared for both the career options. With a family of doctors to turn to for advice, my choice to join this profession was pretty easy to make.
Once I got into medicine, it got exciting, fascinating and inspiring. I got engrossed in the tough field, memorizing fat books one after the other and burning the midnight oil every day. The competition was intense; but I chose my response. I did not let it discourage me, I did not stop it from pushing me to do better and better.
Once I graduated with an MBBS, I chose Dermatology as my main stream because I was interested in skin and hair diseases. It was a tough decision to make but my family supported me. Not many people choose this stream, but I was always intrigued by the complexities of the human skin. And I also knew that one of the added advantages was the flexible work timing that came along with this field.
While most dermatologists are regarded as cosmetic therapists, dermatology is a much wider field. It deals with serious, and sometimes, life threatening skin diseases. Anybody may need a dermatologist – for such simple & common things like skin blemishes, to drug rashes, allergies and skin and hair diseases. Dermatology is so vast and vital that it is a part of our daily lives.
1. Studying to become a doctor is hard work. You study for ten years and even after that you still keep studying. You hardly get any time to socialize.
2. It’s also a lot of responsibility because your messing up can put people in difficulty.
3. Opportunities for Dermatologists: Other than hospitals and clinics, companies that make drugs and cosmetics employ dermatologists. Even companies into medical research seek dermatologists.
