WHY JOIN THE ARMY?

People join the Army for the great lifestyle it offers. It offers you challenge, adventure, excitement, honour, prestige, self respect, whole some family life, safety and security for the family. You can enjoy living in different parts of the country and explore different cultures, have access to countless sports and adventure activities, and live in cantonments with its messes and clubs. And of course people join the army to serve and defend the country.

HOW DOES ONE JOIN THE ARMY?

You can enter the army after class 12 through the NDA (National Defense Academy) exam conducted by UPSC. You can appear for the exam even while you are still studying in class 12. Only boys/men can appear for the exam. You can take any subjects in class 12 to appear for the NDA. While applying for the NDA exam, you will enter your preference for joining Army over navy and Air Force.

You can also join the army to be an engineer through the Technical Entry Scheme. You should have taken Physics, Chemistry and Maths in class 12 and scored 70 percent or more. The selection is through an interview process that lasts five days. If selected, the army pays to make you an engineer. After you receive your engineering degree, you are commissioned as an officer in the army.

You can also enter the army after your graduation by clearing the CDSE (Combined Defense Services Exam) conducted by UPSC. To join the army through CDSE, you need to be a graduate with any specialization. The upper age limit is 24 years and you should be unmarried.

Just prior to being commissioned as officers, cadets choose a fighting arm. The major fighting arms are the Armored Corps, the Infantry, and the Artillery, with the others supporting them in battle.

WHAT ARE SOME SOFT REQUIREMENTS FOR THE JOB?

Be sure you can lead a disciplined lifestyle and are comfortable with following the strict hierarchy of command typical of any armed force. Frequent transfers can be unsettling for some.
