XAT

National level postgraduate entrance examination, for students who wish to pursue a postgraduate course in Management or Business offered by the institutions who are participating in the XAT exam.

XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is a national level postgraduate management entrance test that is conducted by the XLRI (Xavier School of Management) on behalf of the XAMI (Xavier Association of Management Institutes). Through the XAT, students can get admission into the postgraduate management programs of more than 100 institutes which are a part of the XAMI.

The XAT is conducted in all major cities of the country annually, generally in the month of January.XAT provides students with the opportunity to join various post graduate courses in the field of Business and Management.

The XAT exam is generally only the first phase of admission into an institute. Your admission into a postgraduate Management program will be based on your XAT scores as well as other criterion such as your performance in the subsequent Personal Interviews, Group Discussions etc. The second phase of the admission process that takes place after you receive your XAT score differs from institute to institute. What are the eligibility criteria?

To be eligible for the XAT exam, you must have completed a Bachelor’s degree course of a minimum duration of 3 years in any field from a recognized university.

Candidates who are appearing for their final year exams (Bachelor’s degree) or awaiting results are also eligible to appear for the XAT exam as long as they can submit their final mark sheets before the specified date.

There is no minimum age criterion to appear for the XAT exam.

How to apply?

You can only register for the XAT online. To apply, go to the XAT website:  http://www.xatonline.net.in/.  

You will receive a XAT ID through E – mail once you fill in the preliminary information. Log in using the XAT ID and complete the registration form by mentioning your educational details and test city choice.

Once you complete the application, you will be required to make the application fee payment. You can make the payment online through a Credit/Debit Card or Net Banking.

The payment can also be made through cash by printing the XAT Pay – In Slip and depositing the amount at the specified bank. Candidates can also pay through a DD by making a DD in favor of ‘XLRI Jamshedpur A/c XAT’, payable at Jamshedpur.

Print the ‘Confirmation Page’ after submitting the application. Applicants paying through cash or DD will have to send a copy of the Confirmation Page along with the Pay – In Slip/DD at the following address:

In case you’re applying for the XLRI programs, you will be required to mention the programs you wish to pursue in order of preference and also choose the city in which you wish to appear for the subsequent interview.

What is the pattern of the examination?

The XAT examination will have multiple sections and will test your Quantitative Ability, Qualitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretative Ability, and Decision Making Ability.

For some questions, there will be negative marking and marks will be deducted for wrong answers. Therefore it is not advisable to attempt questions you do not know the answers to.

The exam will be divided into the following 4 sections: Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation, General Knowledge.

Your score in the ‘General Knowledge’ section will be not be counted while determining your percentile score. However, it will be taken into account by institutes during later stages of the admission process.

The duration of the XAT exam is 3 hours.

Your results will be published on the XAT website in due time.
