CMC Vellore – CET (Christian Medical College, Vellore – Common Entrance Test) is a National level entrance examination that provides students with the opportunity to join various courses in the field of Medicine offered by the Christian Medical College, Vellore which is connected to the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University. These courses include M.B.B.S., B.Sc. Nursing and other courses like Bachelor’s in Occupational Therapy, Bachelor’s in Physiotherapy etc. 
The entrance exam is conducted in various cities across the country and abroad including Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chennai, Delhi, Ernakulam, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kottayam, Lucknow, Madurai, Mumbai, Puducherry, Salem, Thiruvananthapuram, Vellore, Vijayawada & Penang (Malaysia). 
The duration of the M.B.B.S course is 5½ years which includes a mandatory one year internship. The course is one of the best M.B.B.S courses in India and the entrance examination is extremely competitive. Candidates are admitted into the course on the basis of their performance in the entrance examination as well as in the subsequent practical tests and interviews.

There are a total of 100 seats available in the Christian Medical College, Vellore. Out of these 100 seats, 84 seats are reserved for Christian students under the’ Sponsored’ category. The rest of the 16 seats are reserved for students across India under the ‘Open’ category. Out of these 16 seats, 20% are reserved for SC/ST candidates and 1 seat is reserved for the ‘Central Pool Scheme’ by the Government of India.

What are the eligibility criteria?

To be eligible for the M.B.B.S course, you should be an Indian citizen. Candidates who are NRIs and Foreign citizens are also eligible provided that they meet the other eligibility criteria.

Additionally, you should not be less than 17 years of age as on the 31st of December of the year of admission.

You should have passed your Class 12th exam or its equivalents conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Board or other recognized boards or universities with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology as your main subjects.

You should have passed your Class 12th exams or its equivalents in one attempt and without any ‘improvement marks’.

You should have passed each of the following subjects with not less than 60% marks in each subject in your Class 12th exams: Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany + Zoology). Additionally, you should have passed English as a subject in your Class 12th or equivalent examinations.

Your aggregate percentage in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) when taken together, should not be less than 70% in your Class 12th exams as well as in the CMC Vellore – Common Entrance Test.

Candidates belonging to the BC category are required to have scored 60% in each of the above subjects and should have an aggregate percentage of 65% (PCB). Candidates from the MBC category should have scored not less than 55% marks in each of the above subjects and should have an aggregate percentage of 60% (PCB). Candidates who belong to the SC/ST category should have scored not less than 40% marks in each of the above subjects and should have an aggregate percentage of 40% (PCB).

How to apply?

You can only apply for the CMC Vellore – CET online at http://admissions.cmcvellore.ac.in.

Payment for the application form can be made online using  a credit card or offline through a Bank Challan at any branch of the ICICI bank in India. You can also make the payment by issuing a Demand Draft of the specified amount in favor of the ‘C.M.C. Vellore Association a/c’, payable in Vellore.

If you use an offline payment method you would need to send the completed form with proof of payment and other enclosures (if any) at the following address before the specified date: Office of the Registrar, CMC, Vellore, 632002.

What is the pattern of the examination?

The admission process is conducted in two steps. The first step comprises of a Computer Based Entrance Test (Step 1)and the second step comprises of special tests to test the candidate’s character and aptitude (Step 2). You can only appear for the second stage of the selection process if you qualify in the Computer Based Entrance Test (Step 1)..

The Computer Based Entrance Test comprises of objective type questions in the multiple choice format. Each question will have a total of five options with only one correct answer.

It will consist of questions from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and General Ability with an emphasis on speed and accuracy. Few questions will also be related to the issues of Current Topical Interest.

There will be a total of 60 questions each from Physics, Chemistry and Biology. There will be 120 questions in the ‘General Ability’ section.

The total duration of the Computer Based Entrance Test will be 3 hours and 10 minutes (2 hours for Physics, Chemistry and Biology sections + 70 minutes for General Ability section).

Please keep in mind that even though there is no negative marking, you should not attempt questions you do not have an idea about as  1/5th of the maximum marks for that question will be awarded  every time you leave a question unattempted. So it is advisable to leave questions you know nothing about, and guess in questions where you think you know the answer but are not sure.

Candidates who qualify in the Computer Based Entrance Test will be notified through letters sent through speed post. Their hall ticket numbers will also be posted on the CMC website.

They will have to appear for practical tests and interviews (Step 2). Christian candidates who had applied under the sponsored category will be given a test on ‘Bible Knowledge’ that will comprise of 50 multiple choice questions.

Candidates will subsequently have to appear for interviews where they will be assessed on their aptitude for the healing ministry, willingness to serve in remote mission hospitals and a sense of compassion for the suffering.

Please keep in mind that you will have to produce original copies of your enclosures and certificates including mark sheets, caste certificates, birth certificates etc. at the time of practical tests and interviews (Step 2).

You will also have to pass a medical examination conducted by the specified board in order to be considered to be medically fit for the course.

What do you do after you get your results?

Once the results of the Step 2 (Interviews and practical tests) are announced, selected candidates will need to report to the Christian Medical College, Vellore and submit their admission fees and original documents for verification to confirm their seat.

Admissions will be considered as provisional until they are approved by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.
