Design entrance exam, applicable to all the postgraduate design programs offered by participating IITs and IISc – Bangalore, for students from across the country who wish to pursue these courses.

CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design) is a national level postgraduate entrance examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT –Bombay) on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Department, Government of India.

The CEED examination tests your aptitude for design, involving visual perception ability, drawing skills, logical reasoning, creativity and communication skills.

The examination is conducted in several major cities of the country including Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram.

It provides students with the opportunity to pursue the following postgraduate courses in Design:

IISc Bangalore: M.Des. in Product Design and Engineering.

IIT Bombay: M.Des. in Industrial Design/ Visual Communication/ Animation/ Interaction Design/ Mobility and Vehicle Design.

IIT Delhi: M.Des. in Industrial Design.

IIT Guwahati: M.Des. in Design.

IIT Kanpur: M.Des. in Industrial Design.

IISc Bangalore & IIT Bombay: Ph.D programs in Design.

What are the eligibility criteria?

To be eligible for CEED, you should have completed any of the following courses in the qualifying examination:

  1. a.      4 year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Architecture /Design/Interior Design or equivalent
  2. b.      Professional Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent of 4 years duration)
  3. c.       B.F.A (4 year professional program)
  4. d.      Graduate Diploma in Art (5 year program) with one year post qualification work experience
  5. e.       2 year Master’s degree in Arts/Science/Computer Applications

Candidates who are appearing for the final exams of any of the above qualifications are also eligible, provided they can submit their final mark sheets before the specified date.

Candidates with a 3 year Bachelors degree will not be eligible to appear in the CEED examination.

There is no age limit for the CEED exam.

You can appear for the CEED exam as many as times as you wish.

How to apply?

You can only apply for the CEED online.

Application forms are available on the following website: http://www.gate.iitb.ac.in/ceed2014.

Before you start filling the application form online, make sure you have scanned copies of your photograph, signature and other documents (marksheets, degree certificates etc.) ready to be uploaded.

Once you fill in the application form and upload the necessary documents, you will have to make the payment for the application. You can pay online through a credit/debit card or through net banking.

Your Admit Card will only be available on the CEED website. You will need to take a print of your admit card to enter the examination hall.

What is the pattern of the examination?

The CEED examination comprises of 2 parts: Part A and Part B. Both are conducted on the same day without a break and all candidates are required to appear for both the parts.

The total duration of the CEED examination is 3 hours (Part A and Part B).

Part A is a screening test and comprises of objective type questions in the multiple choice format. The duration of Part A of the exam is 1 hour. This part of the exam is in the form of a computer based test.

Part B comprises of hand drawing and design type questions. The duration of the Part B of the examination is 2 hours.

Part A of the exam will be evaluated for all candidates. However, Part B will be evaluated for only those candidates who manage to secure the minimum cutoff marks in Part A of the examination.

Please keep in mind that your score only in Part B of the examination will be taken into account while creating a qualified list and merit list for the CEED examination. However, to get your Part B of the exam evaluated, you would need to have qualified in Part A of the examination.

CEED results will be sent by post to only those candidates who qualify in Part A and Part B of the examination. The results of all other candidates will be available on the following website: http://www.gate.iitb.ac.in/ceed2014.

The CEED scorecard will be valid for a period of 2 years.

Qualifying in the CEED exam does not guarantee admission into any program. You will be required to apply to the desired institutes separately and appear for any tests/interviews and fulfill their eligibility criteria to get admission.

What do you do after you get your results?

There is no common counseling for the CEED exam. You will be required to apply separately to the institute you wish to join. Each institute will have a separate admission procedure and eligibility criteria for candidates.

Under most circumstances, you would be required to appear for further tests or interviews as a part of the admission procedure of any of the participating institutes.
