Which posts are the recruitments conducted for?

The basic difference between the UPSC and the SSC is that the former i.e. UPSC, is responsible for conducting Group A recruitments, such as IAS/IPS/IFS officers through the Civil Services Exam. On the other hand, the latter, i.e. SSC is responsible for conducting recruitments into posts which are subordinate to Group A officers. These include posts that come under Group B, C and D.

The number of posts that the SSC is recruiting for a particular year depends on the number vacancies for that year. These vacancies are determined by individual Central Government departments and ministries.

The SSC makes entry-level recruitment to all Group B posts in the various Ministries/Departments of the Government, which have a maximum pay scale of Rs. 10,500. It also makes recruitments to all Group C posts in the Ministries and Departments of the Government.

The SSC plays a major role in coming up with schemes for lateral recruitments to all Group B posts which are in the pay scale of Rs 9,300 – 34,800 with a maximum grade pay of Rs 42,000 as well as for all Group C posts which are non – technical in nature. It is also responsible for conducting competitive entrance examinations for all the posts and services under its purview, as and when required.

Please keep in mind that the SSC only recruits candidates into lower level posts under the Central Government. Recruitments into Services and Posts under the State Government are conducted by individual State Public Service Commissions

How are the recruitments conducted?

A majority of the recruitments that take place through the SSC happen through a competitive examination followed by an Interview. Only those candidates who secure the required score in the competitive examination can appear for the Personal Interview. A final decision on their recruitment is taken on the basis of their performance in the Personal Interview.

Keep in mind that the SSC conducts different competitive examinations for different posts every year. The examination you will have to appear for will depend on your educational qualifications and the post you wish to apply for. Some of the posts for which the SSC conducts examinations include:

Lower Division Clerks, Grade C and D Stenographers, Assistants, Central Excise Inspectors, Income Tax Inspectors, Preventive officers and Examiners in Custom Houses, Assistant Enforcement Officers, Sub – Inspectors (CBI and Central Police Organizations) etc.

Other recruitments

Apart from the above mentioned All India Examinations, the SSC also conducts recruitments into isolated posts which come under the ‘Group B Non – Gazzetted posts’ category and the ‘Group C Non – Technical posts’ category.

As compared to the posts for which the SSC conducts All India Examinations, the vacancies for these posts are much smaller in number and the eligibility criteria depends on the department and post you’re applying for.

Recruitments into these types of posts are generally conducted in either of the following 4 ways:

  1. Candidates are first shortlisted on the basis of their marks in the qualifying examination (Class 12th/Graduation). Selected candidates are then made to appear in an Interview.
  2. Candidates are first made to appear in a screening test and the ones who are selected are then made to appear for an interview.
  3. Candidates have to first take a ‘Proficiency Test’ in subject related to the post. Selected candidates are then judged on their performance in the subsequent interview.
  4. Candidates are first shortlisted on the basis of their marks in the qualifying examination (Class 12th/Graduation). Selected candidates are then made to appear in an Interview/Skill Test.

What are the prospects?

There is a popular belief that there is very little scope to grow professionally in the Government until you’ve through the Civil Services Exam. This couldn’t be further away from the truth. The reality is that like any other organization, the Government also offers various opportunities for its employees to grow professionally and take up greater roles.

Find out about the Top 7 Fixed Hours Jobs.

Irrespective of the job grade (B/C/D) you’ve been recruited into, you will get ample opportunities to move up the ladder in terms of job responsibilities, salaries and significance.

The Government and its bodies like the SSC and the UPSC regularly come up with schemes for existing Government employees with the required experience to move into higher positions and take up bigger responsibilities through Promotions, Transfers and Deputations.

Not only that, but various ministries and Government departments regularly release job advertisements for vacant positions where they look to hire employees who are already employed by the Government. Additionally, there are many exams conducted for vacant positions that you can appear for (if eligible) and if you’re meritorious, it is a possibility that you get the job.

Even though these opportunities come in regularly, you will need to be alert and grab them as and when they arise so as to trump the competition. Information about such schemes, vacancies and transfer opportunities are posted on the UPSC, Ministry and SSC websites (whichever applicable) as well as circulated within the Government. Keep a regular check on these websites and always be on the lookout for any job opportunity you’re eligible for, within your department as well as outside of it.

Keep in mind that if you wish to grow professionally within the Government, you will have to fight the culture of complacency and monotony that exists within Government offices and employees. Do not let discouraging words from seniors or colleagues affect you and always keep your career objectives in mind. Remind yourself that what differentiates you from others is that you will take initiative when others will hesitate. Show your seniors that you are capable of taking up bigger responsibilities and performing bigger duties.

If you’re meritorious and hard working, then there is every possibility that your talent will not go unnoticed and you will be rewarded with bigger posts, provided you take the initiative when required.
