Tamil Nadu Medical Admissions

Tamil Nadu does not have its own medical entrance exam. Students are admitted into Medical and Dental colleges in Tamil Nadu on the basis of their results in their Class 12th or equivalent examinations.

Admissions into the MBBS/BDS courses take place through an offline counseling procedure which is conducted by the ‘Selection Committee’, Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu.

The Directorate of Medical Education conducts this counseling in 2 rounds. The first round is for all students and has reservations for all categories. The second round of counseling is conducted for seats that are left vacant after the first round.

What is the counseling procedure?

Once your Class 12th results are announced, you will have to participate in an offline counseling procedure which is conducted by the ‘Selection Committee’, Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu.

To apply for the counseling, you will need to procure the brochure and application forms from the following websites: www.tnhealth.org and www.tn.gov.in.

The application form will contain 2 parts: An application form and an OMR form. You will need to fill and paste your photograph on both the forms. The photograph you paste on the application form will need to be attested.

You will need to submit the filled application forms along with a Demand Draft of the specified amount (towards cost of application form) to be made in favor of ‘The Secretary, Selection Committee’, payable at Chennai.

Send both the application forms along with the Demand Draft and attested copies of all your documents including Class 12th mark sheet, Birth Certificate etc. at the following address through registered/speed post:

The Secretary,
Selection Committee,
162, E.V.R. Periyar Salai,
Kilpauk, Chennai – 600 010.

Once you submit the application form, the Selection Committee will include your name in the Merit List and give you a rank on the basis of your Class 12th marks (subject to normalization).

The total marks obtained by an eligible candidate in the Science subjects in his/her Class 12th examinations are reduced to the base of 200 marks during normalization.

The method of obtaining this rank is mentioned in the information brochure as well as on the following websites: www.tnhealth.org and www.tn.gov.in.

After your rank has been published, you will need to report for the counseling on the specified date after receiving the ‘Call Letter’. You will not be eligible for admission into a college if you or your authorized representative do not report for the counseling personally.

Before you report for the counseling, make sure you research in detail about the colleges you can join through this counseling procedure.

Make your choices/preferences based on two main factors:

1. The colleges you wish to join.

2. The colleges that are likely to admit you based on your rank. Go through the ranks that were admitted by a particular college last year for your course. You can obtain the ranks of last year from the counseling website.

Base your decision on these two factors and consider multiple choices to ensure that you receive an admission.

You will need to reach the counseling venue on the specified date. Reach the venue in time along with all your important documents for verification along with attested copies of each document.

You will also need to take a Demand Draft of the specified amount (towards admission fee), drawn in favor of ‘The Secretary, Selection Committee’, payable at Chennai.

Once you reach the venue and the counseling begins, you will be allowed to choose the college you wish to join from the ones that offer your course and are available for your rank at that point of time.

You will have to reach the college/institute in which you’ve been granted admission within the specified duration along with all your documents so as to confirm your admission.
