WHAT DOES A JUDGE DO?

Judges use their great understanding of the law of the land. In a case between two parties, the Lawyers put forward arguments on behalf of the two parties, judges seek understanding first and then make lawful settlement of the disputes.

Contrary to popular belief, judges do not make laws, they ensure that the law is followed. They interpret law with respect to the situation at hand. The laws are made by the elected representatives of the people, the Politicians.

HOW DOES ONE BECOME A JUDGE:

To become a judge, a lawyer needs to apply for the state level judicial services exams before he/she turns 35. Starting off in district courts, such judges can move on to High Courts. It’s rare for a judge that joins through the judicial services exams to go on to be a judge in the Supreme Court of India.

To become a judge in the Supreme Court of India, here is the path to follow: Be at least 45 years old and build up 20 years of practice as a lawyer in a high court to be nominated as a judge, become the chief justice of the high court, and be nominated as a judge in the Supreme Court.
